My Background

I am a visual designer and architect based in Madrid.

I’ve been creating digital products since 2021, working on web and mobile platforms with tech startups and B2C businesses. My main fields of expertise are product design, branding, and prototyping.

I’m passionate about design in all its forms. Curiosity is one of the greatest virtues we have and it’s what keeps us alive.

My creative process

As a UI/UX designer, my approach is deeply rooted in invention, creative vision, and above all, simplification. Drawing inspiration from visionary architects and industrial designers like Dieter Rams and Shigeru Ban, I believe that the best design is honest, functional, and precise.

With four years of experience navigating complex product challenges, I have learned that a successful process is never rigid.

Honest alignment starts with a real conversation. It’s important for me to understand what motivates the client and learn more about the story behind the project.

With this, it’s easier to define project goals, acknowledge what’s doable and what isn’t, and understand the core problem before moving a single pixel.

Quick sketching is one of my favorite tools to capture quick ideas onto a canvas as fast as possible.

This rapid ideation allows us to explore multiple directions without attachment, even throughout advanced stages of the design process to solve specific problems. I’m a big fan of the Ideate stage in a Design Thinking process and the freedom it gives me to explore multiple ideas.

Quick sketching is one of the most effective ways to capture ideas quickly

Continuous, flexible iteration keeps us on track. The design process is a living thing, and it is always evolving.

I work with weekly stand-ups with clients and teams to review progress, gather feedback, and readjust our course if the project demands it.

Going the extra mile ensures the best results. Good is not the finish line. I am committed to delivering the absolute best, whether that means refining a micro-interaction, rethinking a user flow, or ensuring the final handoff is flawless.

I aim to build experiences that are intuitive, intentional, and built to last.

My standard design process

What +12 years in the design field has taught me

Although I’ve always been passionate about art and tech, I’ve been directly involved in the design industry since 2014, when I enrolled in the Architecture Bachelors program.

Going to college, and particularly with an Architecture degree, helps you think quickly on your feet, finding holistic approaches to finish a project, and balancing out aesthetics and usability.

Around 2020 and while I was finishing my capstone project, I discovered UI/UX design and completed courses and specializations online. The best part about design is that you never stop learning.

I realized Architecture and UI/UX design had a lot in common: learning about the user, defining the context and, essentially, solving problems.

After finishing my studies in 2022, I’ve collaborated with clients all around the world and gotten involved with the design events and activities in my city.

I’m passionate about design in all its forms. Curiosity is one of the greatest virtues we have and it’s what keeps us alive.

FAQ

How do I start a project?

Feel free to schedule a free discovery call, or email me at hello@alexandervarela.com with a brief description of your project, budget, timeline and any questions or ideas you have.

How long does it take you to finish a project?

Depending on the scope, websites and landing pages usually take 4 – 6 weeks to design. WordPress development usually takes 2 – 3 weeks.

Projects with a bigger scope, involving other factors such as branding or design systems, usually take 3 – 6 months.

All designs are responsive for desktop, tablet and mobile.

How many revisions do you offer?

Each project includes unlimited revisions. I am always open to collaborating and sharing ideas until we are both happy with the results.

Do you work alone?

I handle most of my projects alone, although I occassionally collaborate with other senior UX designers and web developers if need be.

Are your designs made from scratch? Do you use AI?

Although I use AI to speed up simple, repetitive tasks, the creative process is developed from scratch.

I do not use AI as a replacement for my work as a designer.
